Floyd Shivambu remains a member - MKP

The uMkhonto weSizwe Party says Floyd Shivambu remains a member of the organisation, despite his recent controversial statements.

However, the party's spokesperson, Nhlamulo Ndlela, says they are reviewing his conduct.

In a press briefing last week, Shivambu publicly announced plans to form a new political party.

It came after he was demoted from his role as the party's secretary-general to an ordinary party member.

Despite initially saying Shivambu would be redeployed to Parliament, he was not among the nine new MKP members sworn in on Wednesday.

Ndlela told the SABC that Shivambu was accused of violating the party’s constitution, which he had helped draft, by taking an unauthorised trip to Malawi to visit the church of wanted fugitive Shepard Bushiri in Malawi.

Ndlela said that they are not in a hurry to expel Shivambu.

"Internally, we are not a leadership that takes rash decisions. We apply our minds, and we need to understand what is this thing that he's coming up with. As a member of uMkhonto weSizwe, to a good extent, he has to account to us as the leaders. I mean, he's an ordinary member.

“He wants to go and set up this initiative. What is this initiative, if we're talking about uMkhonto weSizwe of being the platform? We want to see what he's obviously going to say on Friday. We are tracking his activities and interviews, and we'll make a determination with the guidance of the leadership and the president."
