The National Consumer Commission (NCC) is set to approach the Consumer Tribunal over Ford's alleged violation of South Africa's Consumer Protection Act.

The NCC says it is not satisfied with the manner in which Ford has handled the Kuga SUV fire incidents and the treatment of its customers.

"We have at the end of the investigation, found that there was contravention in respect of various sections of the consumer protection action and in terms of that the NCC has resolved to prosecute Ford," says NCC spokesperson Trevor Hattingh.

"We are in the process of completing our application and to file - where after we will file it with the Consumer Tribunal for purposes of prosecution."

In 2017, Ford announced a safety recall of Kuga 1.6l models manufactured between December 2012 and February 2014 after a number of the cars caught fire.

Two years earlier,  33-year Reshall Jimmy died when his Ford Kuga caught fire while on holiday.
