Mothibe died in a car crash on the R512 road in Hartbeespoort on Thursday.

The party’s provincial secretary, Louis Diremelo, announced her death in a statement.

“Comrade MaJos, as she was affectionately known, met her untimely death after being involved in a horrific accident while driving on the Hartbeespoort Provincial Road (R512),” the statement read.

Diremelo lauded the late Mothibe as a true servant of the people whose life could be characterised as that of a true revolutionary.

“With her sharp mind and easy humour, Comrade Jostina’s passing leaves a huge void in the African National Congress (ANC), and the entire community of Madibeng,” he said.

“She made an immeasurable contribution to the Madibeng Madibeng Local Municipality during the time of her deployment as the Executive Mayor. Her groundbreaking work entrenched accountability, active citizenry, and the provision of quality services for the benefit of our people,” Diremelo added.

Mothibe was elected mayor of the Madibeng local municipality, but was suspended by her own party, the ANC, in 2019 following violent service delivery protests.

Despite this, she stayed on as mayor until she was removed from office through a motion of no confidence in 2021.

Diremelo sent his condolences to Mothibe’s family, adding that details of her funeral would be publicised once consultations with her family had been finalized.

The North West ANC spokesperson was not available for comment at the time of publication.
