Former Parktown Boys coach pleads guilty to 144 sexual assault charges

A former Parktown Boys water polo coach has pleaded guilty to 144 counts of sexual assault.

Collan Rex pleaded guilty to the charges at the Gauteng South High Court sitting in Palm Ridge on Tuesday.

 The National Prosecution Authority’s (NPA) Gauteng spokesperson Phindi Mjondongwana says the state is now left with 183 counts where it will have to prove its case.

 "Today he (Rex) made an admission to 144 counts of sexual assault which means that the state is left with 183 counts where the state will have to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt by leading evidence of witnessed in relation to charges preferred to Mr Rex," she says. 

 The disgraced coach was initially charges with 327 counts which range from attempted murder, one of rape, assault, exposing children to pornography and sexual grooming as well as sexual assault.

 The trial against him will continue on Monday when the state will call its first witnesses.
