Time at Tutuka ‘was nothing but hell’, power station’s boss tells Scopa
Updated | By Sibahle Motha
The former General Manager of Tutuka Power Station Sello Mametja has told the Standing Committee into Public Accounts (Scopa) how Eskom people bet that he would not last in his role.

Eskom roped in Mametja to fix the Mpumalanga-based power station, which had become synonymous with corruption, sabotage and the coal cartels.
“There were points where there were even bets at the station to say that ‘he is not going to last nor will he sort out the issues that he is after’. People won some money because of that,” Mametja told Scopa at Eskom’s Megawatt Park headquarters on Tuesday.
Mametja spent two years at Tutuka before he tendered his resignation.
Before his resignation, the power utility appointed private security officers to keep him safe.
He also had to wear a bulletproof vest.
Mametja described his time at Tutuka Power Station as “nothing but hell”.

The parliamentary watchdog committee is expected to return to Eskom on Wednesday, where COO Jan Oberholzer is expected to face questions from MPs.
The board is also expected to answer questions left over from Tuesday.
