Free State students appear for assault

Two Free State students appeared in the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court on Thursday accused of assaulting another student, Free State police said.

The matter was postponed to April 9, Captain Chaka Marope said.
He said Cobus Muller and Charl Blom were driving a bakkie on the University of the Free State's Bloemfontein campus on Monday night and allegedly ran over Muzi Gwebu.
Later, the two allegedly confronted Gwebu and assaulted him.
Rector Jonathan Jansen said the university regarded the matter in a very serious light, and was doing its own investigation.
The university said the students, if found guilty in the criminal and institutional investigations, would not be allowed to study at the university.
The Young Communist League of SA (YCLSA) condemned the incident and called on the SA Human Rights Commission to look into the matter.
"This is the same university that was in the headlines in 2010 for similar incidents of racism," YCLSA spokesman Khaya Xaba said in a statement.
"Such attacks have no space in our democracy. When we ushered in the democratic dispensation in 1994 it was meant to obliterate all forms of racism, tribalism and sexism," Xaba said.
