Gang of ATM bombing suspects arrested in Limpopo

Limpopo police have arrested a group of nine suspects believed to be part of a syndicate responsible for a series of ATM bombings in the province.

Police say the ATM bombing suspects are aged between 28 and 43 and allegedly terrorized the province between 2023 and 2024. 


They were arrested on the R81 highway next to the Mall of the North in Polokwane on Sunday.


The group was travelling in two vehicles and according to police intelligence, they were on their way to Gauteng.


Thakeng says the suspects engaged in a shootout with police and abandoned one of their getaway vehicles before escaping on foot.


They are suspected of bombing two ATMs in the Mopani district on Friday and Saturday.

"On Friday, 07 March 2025, at approximately 02:00, a group of armed men allegedly attacked a fuel station in Morudji Village, Bolobedu policing precinct, holding employees at gunpoint before bombing the ATM. No money was taken as the ATMs were empty.


"The following day, on Saturday, at approximately 04:00 AM, the same group targeted another ATM in the Giyani policing area, where an undisclosed amount of cash was stolen.


"Four South Africans and five foreign undocumented nationals are facing possession of unlicensed firearms, possession of illegal explosives, possession of dye-stained money and contravention of Immigration Act.”


Three vehicles were seized and the suspects will appear in local magistrate's courts.
