On Tuesday, a Grade 9 pupil from Sizwe Secondary School in Germiston was allegedly stabbed to death by a Grade 11 pupil from the same school.

The circumstances leading up to the incident remain unclear.

Spokesperson Steve Mabona says the department will launch its own investigations.

"Understandably so schools are now on recess which will then destabilise the process but we will continue to investigate and make sure that when school reopens on the 14th of April we should be able to say 'this is what we are going to do going forward.

"We denounce all violent acts by learners upon fellow learners."

Experts have sounded loud warnings about the vulnerability of sub-Saharan countries to the highly contagious respiratory virus. Many countries are at high risk, given weak health systems, poverty, urban slums, porous borders and poor sanitation.

In a separate incident, a Grade 1 pupil at Summerwood Primary School in Fairmount succumbed to a short illness while in hospital.

The department has sent its condolences to the family.

"We wish to convey our sincere condolences to all the families that have lost their children in this first term," Mabona adds.

"This was a difficult first term in our academic calendar."

Mabona says the department remains hopeful that the remainder of the year will not be as tragic.
