Gauteng govt officials to undergo lifestyle audits
The Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) is set to conduct comprehensive lifestyle audits on all officials in Supply Chain Management (SCM) and finance functions as part of a wider effort to enhance transparency and ethical governance.
This initiative, aligned with Premier Panyaza Lesufi's commitment made during his 2023 State of the Province Address (SOPA), aims to strengthen accountability and combat corruption within the provincial government.
In a statement, the provincial government explained that the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) will carry out the audits under a Secondment Agreement with the Office of the Premier established in 2023.
GPG spokesperson Vuyo Mhaga emphasized that the initiative underscores the provincial government's firm stance against financial misconduct.
The audits will primarily target procurement and financial decision-making officials across all GPG departments and entities.
Lesufi stated that by taking proactive steps against corruption, the government aims to foster a culture of transparency and responsible leadership.
“Public trust in government institutions is of utmost importance, and these lifestyle audits will serve as a critical tool in restoring and maintaining that trust,” he said.
The audits will be rolled out in phases, with the first phase focusing on the Premier and Members of the Executive (MECs), followed by the second phase targeting Accounting Officers (HoDs), and CEOs of GPG departments and entities.
“This initiative represents a significant step toward safeguarding public resources, promoting good governance, and ensuring that government officials operate within ethical and legal frameworks,” the statement concluded.
Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance (DA) said if it was in charge of the Gauteng government, it would conduct lifestyle audits on all MECs and make the results public.
