The Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts, and Culture has vowed to prevent the liquidation of the Mandela House Museum in Soweto.

This follows reports that the tourist site will be liquidated to pay off debt.
The house, which is a major tourist attraction on the famous Vilakazi Street in Soweto, is due to be liquidated and the assets sold to pay off debtors.
MEC Mbali Hlophe told the Gauteng provincial legislature on Thursday that her department is set to meet with liquidators in an attempt to stop the process.
“We have learnt of the unfortunate plans to liquidate the house of a Nobel Peace Prize holder and our first democratically elected president Nelson Mandela.
“The liquidation of this house, which is an asset of our history, will be a travesty to not just the province but the nation. Our department, together with the premier’s office, will be meeting with the liquidators to intervene immediately as we view this as a critical manner.”
