Gauteng Health: Measures in place to mitigate disruptions due to closure of Charlotte Maxeke
Updated | By Anastasi Mokgobu
The Gauteng Department of Health says it has put measures in place to minimise the disruption of healthcare services due to the fire at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital.

The hospital has been temporarily closed following the fire that broke out at it special dispensary store on Friday.
The blaze subsequently spread to other parts of the hospital and was only doused on Saturday.
The department moved all patients to the nearest facilities.
The National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) and the Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng have called for an immediate investigation into the blaze.
“All patients that had planned caesarean surgeries and urgent surgeries at the hospital should go to the Discoverers Community Healthcare Centre a day before they are scheduled for admission,” the department said in a statement on Tuesday.
“All ante-natal services will be offered at Rahima Moosa Mother & Child Hospital.”
Spokesperson Kwara Kekana adds that all patients booked for gynae surgery will be contacted for appointments.
“They will be operated at South Rand Hospital by the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital team.
“Gynae clinic services will also be provided at South Rand Hospital. All booked patients will be contacted and given new dates,” she says.
Listen to Kwara Kekana below:
“All those who are on chronic medication should take their script to their nearest hospital or clinic so that they can be issued with medication.”
She says patients who were transferred from Charlotte Maxeke following the fire are being accommodated at other hospitals in the province.
