Gauteng wants to tighten booze sales beyond Covid-19, warns Makhura

Gauteng Premier David Makhura says the province will investigate the possibility of tightening the sale of alcohol beyond the current Covid-19 regulations.

Makhura attended the handover of 54 new high-performance vehicles to law enforcement in the province on Saturday.
"Many crimes in our communities happen in the vicinity of places where alcohol is sold,” Makhura said.
"Those who sell alcohol do not follow their license regulations.
"I want to announce that the Gauteng provincial government will review the regulations governing the sale of alcohol this year and we want to tighten them.
"We have shebeens that operate next to creches and next to schools.”
Makhura said this does not mean there will be a ban on the sale of alcohol.
"We must tighten the regulations, outside the conditions and situation of Covid-19.”
