Hlophe, who has been confirmed as the leader of the official opposition, told MPs that the “Ramaphosa faction of the ANC and the DA” are to blame for the turn of events.

He opened his address to the debate with a quote by former President Thabo Mbeki, who said the people are aware that unity is impossible in a country that is not united.

Hlophe argued that a government of national unity was only necessary due to a political crisis caused by the ANC’s loss of majority during the recent general elections.

"Through what magic do you hope to forge a national unity of the oppressor and the oppressed ?" Hlophe asked the president.

"Our position is very clear. When the ANC could not secure a majority, it became desperate, and the so-called government of national unity was no more than a desperate and deliberate attempt to hold onto power.”
