Govt property torched in Kwaggafontein protest

Residents of Kwaggafontein in Mpumalanga have torched the offices of the social development department.

Mpumalanga police spokesperson Leonard Hlathi says the situation in the town remains extremely tense and volatile.
Hlathi says: "Those that shall be found definitely will continue to face the full might of the law, just the same as those that we have arrested. We cannot allow a situation where community members are becoming law unto themselves or damaging property belonging to the same community and government."
Residents embarked on a protest on Monday over a lack of service delivery.
Thirty-eight suspects will appear in a local magistrate's court on Tuesday facing various charges, including public violence.
Police have called for calm.
"Even though you have grievances, this is not the way to air your grievance,” says Hlathi.
Police are continuing to monitor the situation.
