National Treasury’s total cash injection into the South African Special Risk Insurance Association (Sasria) in the 2021/22 financial year will top R20 billion.

Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana tabled Treasury’s budget before a Parliamentary committee on Wednesday.
During his address to MPs, Godongwana reiterated government’s support to the state-owned insurer following a spike in claims after the 2021 July unrest.
A total of R22 billion was paid to Sasria.
“Sasria has been key to our reposes to the unrest in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng last year and we have an obligation to make sure that it an honour its financial obligations.
“The 2021/22 expenditure also includes R18 billion paid to Sasria as a direct charge from the revenue fund. On aggregate Sasria has received a total of R22 billion in the 2021/22 financial year.”
Following the massive fallout in KZN and Gauteng last year, Sasria was key to government’s response to the unrest.
Warehouses, malls, retail shops and factories went up in flames when disgruntled citizens took to the streets in what government categorised as an attempted insurrection.
Shelves were emptied while some major roads were blockaded, bringing operations and economic activity in both provinces to a grinding halt.
More than 330 people died from the week-long unrest and at least R50 billion in damages was incurred.
