GP flooding leaves Soshanguve in the dark

Parts of Soshanguve were plunged into darkness on Thursday.

City Power faced mounting pressure to repair numerous outages following Wednesday night's heavy rain and flooding in Gauteng.
City Power received over 5,000 outage-related queries on Thursday, most linked to the intense rains.
Multiple cable faults have crippled the Soshanguve 1A substation, forcing technicians to work around the clock to restore power.
However, recurring faults on various feeder cables are hampering progress.
"By Thursday, power had been restored to Jukulyn main feeders in Block X and Block W substations, and 90% of Block BB. But while fixing the last fault, the network tripped, causing additional issues in areas where power was already restored," said Tshwane spokesperson Lindela Mashigo.
The situation worsened with faulty Block JJ main feeder cables.
"We suspect the multiple faults could be caused by burned-out copper cables on the main supply line," Mashigo added.
Tshwane urged residents to be patient as technicians work tirelessly to repair the damage and investigate the cause of the faults.
Meanwhile, City Power reported that Randburg lost four distributors—Linden South, Montgomery Park, Victory Park, and Northcliff South—due to flooding.
“We’re facing significant challenges due to localised flooding, with many roads blocked off for safety. We apologize for the frustration this may cause,” said City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena.
The South African Weather Service issued a yellow level 2 warning for Gauteng, forecasting heavy rains and damaging winds.
