Hawaii prosecutor rules Myeni shooting was justified
A Hawaii prosecutor says two local police officers will not be criminally charged for Lindani Myeni’s murder as the shooting was justified.
The South African rugby player Lindani Myeni was shot and killed by Honolulu police in April.
At the time, a woman called the police on the 29-year-old, saying Myeni wanted to hurt her.
In a widely circulated 911 call, the woman told the operator that he had identified himself as Lindani Myeni from South Africa but that she didn't know him personally.
In a media briefing on Wednesday, Prosecutor Steve Alm detailed why a months-long investigation by his office concluded the Myeni’s shooting was justified.
Alm said Myeni refused to comply with warning instructions from the officers.
“He entered the home uninvited, he refused to leave for five minutes despite being asked repeatedly to do so and him saying he was not afraid of the police tells me two things. He knew what he was doing he knew she was calling the police be… and him saying he is not afraid of the police I think gives a glimpse to what his attitude was towards the police and again this attitude strike me as strange and bizarre …
“The police had to use deadly force because their attempts to use non-deadly force didn’t work,” said Alm.
