Hawks: More Covid-19 arrests on Thursday

The Hawks says it expects to make more arrests in connection with Covid-19 corruption on Thursday.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Special Investigating Unit (SIU) and the Hawks briefed Parliament's Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa) on the status of Covid-19 corruption cases on Tuesday morning.
Hawks head Godfrey Lebeya told MPs the arrests are in connection with personal protective gear tenders.
Lebeya said the unit is dealing with 174 matters, while six criminal cases already in court.

"The current caseload is 174 matter, this includes six criminal cases that are already on the court roll. In this six cases, there are 19 accused person that are standing before court.
"We expect that there will also success that are coming. Maybe I need to conclude by saying the next arrest will be taking place this Thursday.”
Some 20 cases linked to Covid-19 fraud and corruption have been referred to the NPA, while disciplinary action has been recommended for officials in 12 cases.
