Hlophe ‘unfit to be a judge’ - Freedom Under Law
Updated | By Karabo Tebele
Freedom Under Law has called for the suspension of Western Cape Judge President John Hlophe following his decision acquit African National Congress (ANC) MP Bongani Bongo.

Hlophe dismissed the corruption charges against Bongo in the Western Cape High Court on Friday.
Freedom Under Law chairman Johann Kriegler says they believe Hlophe is biased in his rulings.
"We believe that Judge Hlophe is not fit to be a judge and we have said so ever since in 2008 trying to influence the Constitutional Court in favour of Zuma.
"Now in the judgment case against Bongani Bongo, Hlophe has shamed, and he is not an honest judge because he has acquitted a man at the end of a state case and clearly wrongly."

Kriegler says they have written to the judicial service commission to ask it to launch a probe into Hlophe’s conduct.
"We have long since asked for him to be suspended, because the judicial service commission has the power and the duty in certain circumstances to recommend to the president to suspend a judge pending disciplinary proceedings.
"We have asked repeatedly for recommendation be made. It has not been made and we say that this latest judgment shows how glaringly it must be done because the man should not be on the bench."
