Hoërskool Driehoek in Vanderbijlpark, south of Johannesburg,
has been forced to close its doors following the collapse of a walkway at the
school on Friday.

The collapse cost the lives of three learners and left twenty-six others injured.

Two boys and one girl lost their lives when the walkway path collapsed after school assembly.
Two of the injured learners were released to their parents while twenty-two were taken to various hospitals on the area.
Gauteng education MEC Panyaza Lesufi visited the school on Friday.
He told the media that his department will foot the medical bills for all learners, irrespective of their financial status.
“There are learners that have been identified, that they didn’t have medical or financial assistance that was needed for them to be attended to.”
Learners and parents will also receive counselling at the school.

Lesufi said pending investigations into the collapse of the walkway, the school will be closed indefinitely.
“I can assure you, under the conditions that I have seen our learners, and it would be difficult to rush them back to the classroom.”
Police have also opened a probe into the deaths of the leaners.
