HPCSA, Wits dissociate themselves from bogus doctor

The Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as well as the University of Witwatersrand (Wits) have distanced themselves from bogus "Dr Zingelwa Lani."

The famous TikTok doctor ‘Dr Matthew Lani’, who claims to have studied medicine at Wits Medical School, has been misrepresenting himself, according to both institutions.
This after he was seen in scrubs, allegedly at one of Gauteng’s public hospitals, on social media.
Lani, who is known for dispensing medical advice online, says his name is not listed with the HPCSA as he uses different names on social media.
However, in a statement released by the HPCSA, the organisation disassociated itself from the 'fake doctor'.
"In the widely circulating video, Mr. Matthews Zingelwa-Lani claims to have been authorised by the HPCSA to make and distribute his video. The HPCSA would like to put it on record that no authorisation has been granted to Mr Zingelwa-Lani to make statements on behalf of the Council stating that he is a registered practitioner," they say.
Wits said they cannot find the bogus doctor's names on their system.
"Based on the names presented to the institution and facts at hand, the University cannot find any person who graduated by the name Matthew Bongani Zingelwa or Sanele Zingelwa in recent years. We are requesting 'DR Matthew Lani' to retract any such claim with immediate effect," they said.
