It is understood that the victim, who worked for a courier company, was escorting one of their delivery vehicles when he stopped at a traffic light.

Gauteng police spokesperson Mathapelo Peters says two armed suspects approached the escort vehicle and fired multiple shots.

"The injured driver managed to get out of the vehicle and ran into the veld next to the road where he allegedly collapsed and succumbed to his injuries," says Peters.

"The motive for the shooting is unknown.”

Eyewitness Corne Breedt says she saw two men approach the white vehicle at a busy intersection.

"I stopped at the robot on the corner of Rubenstein and Garsfontein. The white bakkie was behind me, we were supposed to turn right and then as the robot turned red they started shooting.

"I saw the firearm, he had a fire pistol in his hand. He was standing away a bit from the door where he opened the door where he was shooting the guy and he literally fired all of the bullets out on that guy. I thought it was World War 3."

Breedt says chaos erupted when the hail of bullets hit the car.

"People sitting next to the road on my right is running away towards the Spar side because the bullets is flying that side through the bakkie. Other cars were reversing.

"It was chaos within 5 seconds."

A shell-shocked Breedt says it seems robbery was not the motive.

"They didn't run away with any bags or nothing. That guy just shot that guy and then ran away, They didn't went into the van whatsoever."

Breedt says she contacted police, who arrived at the scene half an hour later.

"By then I know already the guy is dead because they shot about seven to eight shots to this guy."

Paramedics declared the man dead on the scene.
