IPID battles case backlog due to staff shortage
Updated | By Mmangaliso Khumalo
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is battling a crippling backlog of over 15,000 unresolved cases.

With over five thousand complaints in two years, calls for swift, transparent accountability grow as public trust in policing declines.
IPID spokesperson Lizzy Suping told SABC News that only 168 investigators are operational nationwide, forcing the recruitment of retired detectives to assist.
"The challenge we have with our backlog is that IPID is very thin on the ground when it comes to the number of investigators who are employed,” said Suping.
"The recruitment of retired detectives will assist us in dealing with some of our backlog cases."
