Jagersfontein dam collapse report handed to NPA

Water and Sanitation Minister Pemmy Majodina says her department has concluded its investigation into the Jagersfontein mine dam collapse.

The 2022 disaster in the Free State mining town left three people dead and displaced hundreds when the mine tailings dam collapsed, sending a torrent of mud into the community and sweeping away nine houses.
On Tuesday, Majodina told Parliament that the report had been handed to the National Prosecuting Authority.
"Our department has concluded criminal investigations, and the docket has been handed over to the National Prosecuting Authority. The prosecutor has acquired all statements and affidavits.
"We also appointed the University of Pretoria and the University of Witwatersrand to conduct a technical forensic investigation on the failure of the Jagersfontein tailing storage facility.
"The report may be used in the criminal proceedings and, therefore, cannot be made public until we are advised by the NPA," she said.
The matter is expected to be enrolled in court in 2025.
Earlier this year, the government handed over more than 100 houses to the victims of the disaster after promising to rebuild the houses two years ago.
