Deputy Police Minister Polly Boshielo said on Monday that they expect to make more arrests in connection with the murder of 11-year-old Jayden-Lee Meek.

Boshielo spoke outside the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court, where the boy’s 31-year-old mother, Tiffany Meek, made her first court appearance for the murder of her son.

The body of Jayden-Lee was found naked and bruised at his residential complex in Fleurhof, west of Johannesburg, in May this year.

Tiffany Meek, who appeared in court wearing a facemask, a black beanie and glasses, stands accused of murder and defeating the ends of justice.

She told the court she intends to appoint a new attorney after her initial lawyer failed to pitch.

Boshielo said this was not an easy case to crack.

"It is rather unfortunate that Jayden was killed and found in the very space where he should have been safe and secure.

"This was not an easy case. We received a lot of backlash on our response and the time it took to ensure a breakthrough, but I must say - this type of case necessitated that our detectives conduct a thorough investigation and present a case that will be able to stand in court."

Dozens of protesters picketed outside the court building, calling for the accused to be denied bail.

The matter was postponed until Friday for bail information.
