Joburg council set to get mayoral race underway
Updated | By Nokukhanya N Mntambo
The City of Johannesburg is expected to hold an extra-ordinary council meeting to elect a new mayor on Tuesday.

The city’s top job has been vacant for at least a month since the death of the late mayor Geoff Makhubo.
Makhubo died of Covid-19 related complications at the start of last month.
The meeting will be held in person at the New Council Chamber in Braamfontein.
Joburg metro MMC for finance Jolidee Matongo has emerged as the front-runner in the African National Congress in the race to take over the keys to the city.
But the party doesn’t have outright majority in the council and will need the backing of other parties.
This is the third change of leadership since the 2016 local elections.
