Joburg EMS sounds alarm after deadly winter fires
Updated | By Mmangaliso Khumalo
Emergency services in Johannesburg have reiterated their warning to residents to exercise caution when using heating devices this winter, following a series of devastating fires that claimed at least five lives over the weekend.

The incidents occurred in three separate areas, Mayfair, Bramfischer, and Mapetla in Soweto, where several homes were destroyed.
Among the victims were two young children, adding to growing concern over fire safety as temperatures continue to drop.
Emergency Management Services (EMS) spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi told SABC News that the fires are a tragic reminder of the risks associated with unsafe heating practices during the cold season.
"We are concerned about this extreme winter weather. We still continue to plead with our residents to continue to exercise caution when using hygiene devices, things like heaters and or blazers," said Mulaudzi.
He added that the rise in informal and backyard dwellings, often made from flammable materials, increases the risk of rapid fire spread, especially when people use unsafe or makeshift heating appliances to stay warm.
Residents are being urged to avoid overloading plug points, leaving heaters unattended, and using open flames for warmth.
