Joburg Water Crisis: City to boost Midrand water supply with new reservoir
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
Johannesburg Water said on Monday that the planned construction of the Carlswald reservoir will help ease the water supply problems in Midrand.

The city's water crisis has led to water restrictions in all its regions.
The entity said the reservoir and water pipeline project will upgrade the water pipeline network in Midrand, and improve water supply to Midrand, Blue Hills and Kyalami areas.
The utility said the design of the 20-megalitre reservoir had been completed, and construction would start once a contractor is appointed.
"The pipeline project is progressing well and is at the environmental assessment stage as well as the public participation process stage. A positive environmental authorisation was granted in September 2024,” said Johannesburg Water’s General Manager William Chitsa.
“The building of this new Carlswald reservoir will improve water storage, as well as ensure an uninterrupted supply of water in the area.
"There is a constant urban development in the city, and we need to ensure that our infrastructure and service delivery match the growing population.”
The proposed pipeline will be approximately 5.1km in length.
It will start on Walton Road and end just outside the Blue Hills Country Estate entrance.
“The pipeline is required to implement the new Carlswald Reservoir supply zone project, to augment the Errand Reservoir – which does not have sufficient capacity,” said Chitsa.
"This will, in turn, supplement and improve storage capacity at the Errand system,” he added.
