Joburg water supply 'normalised', says mayor

Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero has called on the city residents to continue using water sparingly to avoid Level 2 water restrictions.

The metro's water system was affected by several power failures at the Zwartkoppies and Eikenhof pump stations recently.

Morero briefed the media in the city on Friday.

"The water supply status has normalised considerably, compared to last week Friday. There may be a few areas that may still be experiencing no water, but this could be due to airlocks, which our teams on the ground are attending.

"Technical interventions by both Rand Water and Johannesburg Water technical teams are working hard to contribute efforts to progressively realise recovery and to improve the affected reservoirs and towers in order to boost supply and sustain capacity."

The mayor confirmed that the city remains under Level 1 water restrictions as the city struggles to keep taps running.

"I would like to remind our residents that the City remains under Level 1 water restrictions, customers are warned not to abuse water as this can lead to declaring Level 2 water restrictions"

"We have approved extra teams to work during the week and weekend to attend to emergencies and backlogs."

He also called on police to investigate claims of sabotage in the City's water supply.

This comes after allegations that employees may be tampering with the infrastructure to make the mayor look incompetent.

"We note that this ploy is said to be part of a political scheme to render the city ungovernable and to usurp the mayor of his authority, " said Morero.

"These damning allegations will not be taken lightly, and we will explore legal counsel and possible options not ruling out possibly approaching law enforcement agencies for a possible probe to investigate should these allegations be found to be legitimate."
