The street in the Joburg CBD suffered extensive damage following an explosion that claimed the life of one person and left some 40 others injured.

The city has previously said it was looking to declare a local disaster after the explosion.

City Manager Floyd Brink said the city would require about R178 million, which could rise, to repair the road, reconstruct the tunnel and fix other damaged infrastructure.

The city’s spokesperson Mlimandlela Ndamase said there will be investment in new infrastructure.

"The intention is to ensure that out of the explosion, we are able to invest in new infrastructure. Infrastructure which may be supported by the latest in terms of quality and standards, including observation and monitoring of gas in underground cavities within the city," said Ndamase.

The city said methane gas caused a series of events that ultimately caused the explosion.
