The Johannesburg Roads Agency has fired the Lillian Ngoyi Street contractor over poor performance.

Step Up Engineering was appointed to reconstruct the street following an explosion that claimed the life of one person and left around 40 others injured.
The city said methane gas caused a series of events that resulted in the explosion.
Initially, the deadline for the completion of the reconstruction was December 2024.
The city estimated R178 million as the required amount for the repairs.
“A new contractor will be appointed to start early September, the duration of stage one will be 9-months and will be scheduled for completion in May 2025, phase two duration will be 12-month starting May 2025 and will be completed in May 2026” said JRA Acting CEO Lufuno Mashau.
