JRA, Gauteng Roads Dept partner to upgrade traffic lights
Updated | By Selaki Ledwaba
The Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA)has signed a contract with the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport to rebuild, upgrade, and maintain traffic lights on various intersections managed by the Gauteng Province.

With the 2, 023 signalised intersections managed by the road agency, it will be taking on an additional 275 that are managed by the Gauteng Province.
The agency says the partnership with Gauteng Roads and Transport aims to reduce traffic congestion and enhance road safety by ensuring the consistent functionality of traffic signals.
“These upgrades will not only focus on improving safety and security but will also incorporate advanced technologies to optimise traffic flow within the City of Johannesburg,” said JRA CEO Zweli Nyathi.
“This is a significant milestone following extensive discussions between the two entities. Consolidating all traffic lights in Johannesburg under the JRA’s management will streamline repairs, replacements, and maintenance efforts, ensuring the continued safe and efficient operation of designated traffic signals.”
Nyathi said that the collaboration will benefit all road users, particularly in high-traffic areas including the City of Johannesburg’s M1 and M2 Motorways and National freeways.
He adds that the agency will initially prioritise upgrades and maintenance at traffic signals located on key economic and major routes to support Johannesburg’s economic hubs.
“Priority roads include but are not limited to, Winnie Mandela Drive, Beyers Naudé Drive, Allandale Road, Malibongwe Drive, Grayston Drive, Witkoppen Road, Golden Highway, Kliprivier Drive, Hendrik Potgieter Drive, Ontdekkers Road, Heidelberg Road, Soweto Highway, and Chris Hani Road.”
