Kirsten Kluyts murder case transferred to the High Court

The case against 21-year-old Bafana Mahungela has been transferred from the Alexandra Magistrates' Court to the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg for a pre-trial conference to take place in August.

Mahungela appeared before the Alexandra Magistrates' Court on Thursday.


Kluyts' lifeless body was found at the George Lea Park in Sandton, just hours after she failed to complete a park run in October last year.


The 21-year-old suspect was arrested in November 2023 and charged with the murder of the primary school teacher who was also pregnant at the time.


Mahungela is facing charges of kidnapping, robbery with aggravating circumstances, murder, attempted rape and defeating the ends of justice.


National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Phindi Mjonodwane says pre-trial conference will take take place on 16 August 2024. 


"Mahungela will be back in the Alexandra Magistrates' Court on 01 August 2024, as he filed an application for bail on new facts."
