Kodwa to meet players’ union in attempt to diffuse Banyana Banyana row

Sports Minister Zizi Kodwa will meet with the South African Football Players Union on Tuesday to resolve the row between the players and the South African Football Association.

On Sunday, players from the national women's football team boycotted their friendly match against Botswana, just days before the African champions are expected to jet off for their first FIFA Women's World Cup match in New Zealand.
The boycott was prompted by payment issues and what they say was an inadequate venue at the Tsakane township east of Johannesburg where they were supposed to play.
"The meeting with SAPFU will consider issues pertaining to the government's commitment and support to the team, the teams working, welfare and health conditions, including transparency and accountability related to the signing of contracts," says Sports Ministry spokesperson Litha Mpondwana.
"Women's development, women's agency and voice, and women's dignity in sport remain at the centre of the government's gender equality agenda. Women players are assured of a safe environment to raise their concerns without fear of victimisation."
