Lesufi warns heads of department over unused budgets

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has issued a stern warning to heads of departments who fail to utilise allocated budgets, warning of immediate disciplinary processes and possible dismissal.

This follows a R1.2 billion rollover to the next financial year.
Speaking on the sidelines after the Gauteng budget speech on Tuesday, the premier emphasised that such inefficiencies won’t be tolerated.
He stressed that funds must be used for essential service delivery.
“Those HODs that are responsible for that will be history. You can't give people money under the circumstances that we have, and they don't utilise it. And they want them to be rolled over into the next financial year.
“If their reasons are legitimate, we'll then spare them. But if the reasons are not legitimate, unfortunately, they are not fit and proper to run the government with us, and therefore, they need to excuse us.”
Gauteng Finance MEC Lebogang Maile allocated R66 billion to the Health Department for the 2025/2026 financial year, which will strengthen public healthcare facilities across the province.
The Education Department received the biggest allocation of more than R69 billion.
