Mduduzi Mnisi faces charges of premeditated murder after police linked him to the killing.

A passerby made the gruesome discovery while walking in the veld in Durban Deep earlier this month.

The teenager’s genitals were removed, prompting the involvement of the police's occult unit.

Police say the man was taken in for questioning on Monday and, following an interrogation, he was charged.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane says the state intends to oppose bail.

“The matter has been remanded for the state to gather evidence in respect of the bail application that the accused wants to bring before the court. He is charged with premeditated murder, which falls within the ambit of Schedule 6 offences. As the NPA, we will be opposing his release on bail.”

It emerged in court that the accused has a previous conviction for attempted murder and armed robbery from 2007.

However, Mjonodwane says they are awaiting a full profile of the accused to determine if he has any pending matters against him.

“Investigations are ongoing. As the NPA, at this stage, we are not in a position to say whether he has previous or pending cases, nor can we confirm whether he was out on parole. Such information will be presented in court.”

The matter has been postponed until Wednesday, 18 June.
