Limpopo: Counting of votes completed in two districts - IEC

The Independent Electoral Commission in Limpopo said on Thursday that only two districts in the province had completed their vote counting.

This comes as more than 27 million voters were registered for the most uncertain poll since the ANC led the nation out of apartheid rule.

With opposition challenges from both the left and right, unemployment and crime at near record levels and a new generation growing up with no memory of the struggle against white-minority rule, the governing party may be forced to share power.

Provincial Electoral Officer Nkaro Mateta provided an update on the counting of ballots in the province on Thursday morning.

"Both Sekhukhune and Vhembe districts are done. As I am talking to you now, the result slips for both districts are being transported to the local municipality for the capturing of the results,” she said.

Mateta said the results at some voting stations in the Waterberg and Capricorn districts were outstanding.

"In Waterberg, two voting stations are still outstanding in Lephalale Municipality, two voting stations are still outstanding in Modimolle Mookgophong Municipality and one voting station in the Bela Bela Municipality."

Mateta admitted that the glitches with the voting management devices resulted in long queues at voting stations across Limpopo.

"A troubleshooting team was deployed strategically from the results operations centre to go and assist with the queues. This intervention assisted greatly as the queues started moving.

“The troubleshooting teams enforced streaming and splitting of the voters’ roll in voting stations that were not designated as voting stations, as well as the distribution of voting materials."
