Current Health MEC Dr Phophi Ramathuba is by all accounts in pole position to become the province’s first woman premier.

Ramathuba tops the ANC's provincial candidate list.

Other candidates include ANC provincial executive committee deputy secretary Basikopo Makamu and treasurer Nakedi Sibanda-Kekana.

Makamu and Sibanda-Kekana are MECs of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlement and Traditional Affairs, and Sport, Arts and Culture, respectively.

The preferred premier candidate is expected to be inaugurated on 12 June, together with a new speaker and deputy speaker of the provincial legislature.

Outgoing Limpopo Premier Stanley Mathabatha on Monday urged incoming members of the legislature and government executive council to prioritise the people’s interests.

"As this outgoing administration prepares to transit out, I'm confident that the seventh administration will uphold the principles of democracy and continue to foster civic engagement,” he said at the announcement of the final election results in Polokwane.

"It is imperative that we, as voters, protect the institutions of democracy and ensure that our voices are heard in shaping the future of our beloved province, Limpopo.”

The ANC won an outright majority in the province, taking 73% of the votes, followed by the Economic Freedom Fighters with 14% and the Democratic Alliance with 6%.
