The 52-year-old hunter was killed by a Cape buffalo during his hunting expedition with another professional hunter at Bambisana hunting concession on Sunday.

According to the department, Watkins became the buffalo’s target while tracking it down after his first shot failed to put down the 1.3-ton big five animal.

“Once the buffalo had its sight on them, it immediately charged in and targeted the hunter who took the first shot,” says LEDET spokesperson Zaid Kalla.

“By the time it was permanently put down by a professional hunter present, it had already made deadly contact with the hunter.”

“Hunting a buffalo is referred to as a dangerous game hunt.”

Buffalo is one of the animals that tracks its hunters down if they fail to make their kill on the first attempt.

According to Kalla, buffalo can continue tracking its hunters for at least three days until it finds them.
