LISTEN: Bogus Limpopo cop rearrested

Captain Alex Mailula, whose real name is Alex Matsobane Maake, arrived at the Polokwane SAPS in 2012 identifying himself as a Captain from SAPS National Head Office.

 

Without verification and vetting he was allowed to perform duties including leading an elite task team that traced most wanted suspects.

 

Hawks spokesperson Hangwani Mulaudzi says before Maake arrived in Limpopo he had escaped from custody in Pretoria where he was to be sentenced for rape.

 

“Few months before his arrival in Limpopo, Maake had escaped from lawful custody in Pretoria Central police station where he was awaiting his sentence after he was convicted of rape he had committed in 2010 at Boschkop,” he says.

 

Mulaudzi says Maake also faces another charge of rape, where he was convicted in Cystal Park in 2009, but faltered bail conditions.

 

During his arrest Maake tried to flee from police but was shot in the foot. He is recovering in a Limpopo hospital.
