LISTEN: Rhodes approves mandatory vaccination policy
Updated | By Eva Chipa
The council
at Rhodes University approved the senate’s recommendation to make vaccinations
mandatory on Thursday.

Rhodes University is now the second institution of higher learning to make vaccines compulsory for those who wish to study or work at the institution.
The first was the University of Cape Town.
Spokesperson Luzuko Jacobs says those who cannot take the vaccine will need legitimate reasons.
“This not an unreasonable imposition on everybody, council directed that a mechanism be established that will evaluate applications, where there are legitimate reasons why people are unable to vaccinate, that will be considered and will be evaluated on an individual basis.”
He adds that students were represented in the senate when the decision was taken
“Out students are represented in the governance structures, there was a lively debate where our students were represented . . . and all was considered. This being done by the university community as a shared agenda.”
