Dlamini was arrested on Thursday night, shortly after he was interviewed by a radio station in Johannesburg.

Dlamini is spending the week end behind bars and in police detention before he is expected to appear in the Roodepoort Magistrates Court on Monday on charges of housebreaking, theft and malicious damage to property.

Kunene says those close to him, fear that Dlamini may be poisoned while in police custody and an agreement has been struck with Police that Dlamini not be allowed to eat food issued to him from within the police station.

“We therefore fear that he may be poisoned in prison. We negotiated with the police that his mother must go and deliver the food to him in his hand.”

Kunene adds that they believe Dlamini’s arrest was politically influenced, claiming that the Operation Dudula leader was arrested by officers who arrived in an “army of 30 cars”.

“He was at Kaya FM in Rosebank and an army of 30 vehicles of the police brandishing rifles only went to arrest him. We all know that if any arrest is implemented or he’s incarcerated in that particular manner, there is some political intervention that is happening.

“The man is a South African, born in Soweto, stays in Soweto. They know him and where he lives and yet they arrested him in that way meaning that they wanted to intimidate him. Intimidation does not end there. Many people are against the programme that he is involved in.”

Dlamini’s arrest has angered Operation Dudula members.

On Friday they clashed with police outside the Johannesburg Central Prison, demanding that Dlamini be released.

A protest has also been planned for KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday, despite the warning that it would be illegal.
