LISTEN: Sitole a political casualty & Cele must follow, says Sapu

The South Africa Policing Union (Sapu) has blamed politics for the departure of National Police Comissioner Khehla Sitole.

Spokesperson Lesiba Thobakgale says Sithole’s dismissal served the interest of politicians.
“As Sapu, we see the departure of the current national commissioner Khehla Sitole as him being a political casualty. And we are saying, based on what the statement of the presidency has said that is in the interest of the country, but we know that it is in the interest of politicians.”
Thobakgale says if a mutual agreement can be reached between President Cyril Ramaphosa and Sitole, the same can be done with Police Minister Bheki Cele.

“If the general’s departure is imminent like it is on 1st of March, the minister should follow. We want to see the president being consistent and doing the same because the danger there is if the minister still remains, he is part of the problem in policing because of his political interference.
“And you bring another national commissioner, if that national commissioner will stand against political interference like general Sitole has done, then the very same minister would come and have issues again,” says Thobakgale.
