Madlanga has been appointed chairperson of the inquiry, recently announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

It will begin its work once Madlanga officially steps down from the Constitutional Court on Thursday.

The commission will look into the alleged infiltration of criminal syndicates into the law enforcement and intelligence agencies.

It'll also investigate whether politicians, prosecutors, and other officials enabled or ignored criminal activity and whether existing laws and oversight mechanisms are strong enough to stop it.

The inquiry will also investigate whether any member of the national executive was complicit or participated in any criminal activity.

An interim report is expected within six months, with the final report to go to Parliament and the Chief Justice.
