Magalies Water rations water as dam levels fall
Updated | By Lebohang Ndashe
Magalies Water warns bulk customers of upcoming demand management due to below-average rainfall in key regions, including Gauteng and the North West province.

Demand management is due to low dam levels and poor raw water quality in supply schemes.
Magalies Water says ongoing climatic conditions have worsened the decline in raw water quality across various supply schemes, compounded by pollution incidents, directly affecting its ability to produce the necessary volumes of potable water.
The water board’s systems are under strain, struggling to handle the high levels of contaminants entering due to upstream catchment activities (pollution) and climatic factors.
This has led to reduced drinking water production to maintain compliance with SANS 241:2015 specifications.
“As a counter measure, the highly competent team of scientists and process engineers are working towards optimization of the systems and developing the most pragmatic approaches to circumvent the incoming loads of pollution while producing bulk water supply quotas that conform to the design capacities,” says Magalies Water spokesperson David Magae.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) predicts above-normal temperatures due to El Niño, which may lead to higher water consumption and increased demand, while limited raw water availability will reduce Magalies Water’s supply capacity.
Magalies Water urges customers to use the water sparingly during this period, and further apologizes for the inconvenience that this development has caused.
