Maile re-tables Gauteng budget amid global uncertainty
Updated | By Mmangaliso Khumalo
Gauteng Finance MEC Lebogang Maile on Tuesday officially withdrew and re-tabled the province’s 2025/2026 budget following significant amendments to the national fiscal framework triggered by global economic uncertainty.

The move comes in compliance with the Public Finance Management Act and reflects the province’s commitment to align its financial planning with evolving national and international conditions.
In the Gauteng legislature, Maile explained that the re-tabling was necessary after the Minister of Finance adjusted the 2025 Fiscal Framework as part of the revised National Budget.
“These developments precipitated a wave of unprecedented uncertainty worldwide, and certainly on the African continent, where we are having to rethink development aid and re-engineer our approach to revenue generation and efficient utilisation of existing resources."
The 2025 Medium Term Expenditure Framework budget for Gauteng includes transfers from the national government, with the provincial equitable share projected to grow by an average annual rate of 4% — from R133.9 billion in the 2025/2026 financial year to R138.9 billion in 2026/2027, and reaching R144.2 billion in the outer years of the MTEF period.
MEC Maile emphasised the importance of adhering to legislative requirements.
"This was done so that we could re-table the budget today in compliance with Sections 26 and 27 of the Public Finance Management Act, which instructs that the MEC responsible for finance in a province must table the provincial budget for a financial year in a Provincial legislature within a period of two weeks after the tabling of the national annual budget by the minister of finance."
The re-tabling allowed Gauteng to ensure that its budgetary plans reflect the latest economic realities while maintaining fiscal discipline and compliance with legal mandates, the MEC said.
The provincial government is also focused on efficiently utilising available resources to meet development priorities amid ongoing economic challenges.
