Maimane was speaking at his party's Heritage Day celebrations in Soweto and cited Gauteng Education MEC, Panyaza Lesufi, who has been outspoken against the establishment of an Afrikaans university, saying that a race-based institution would fail the country.

Maimane says Soweto was chosen by the Da to commemorate Heritage Day because it is a melting pot of cultural diversity.

Maimane says objecting to the use of one language is a tool that divides the country.

He adds that it could also lead to the attack of other South African languages.
