Chris Hani's daughter, Lindiwe, says it is not enough to celebrate the anti-apartheid stalwart once a year.

Lindiwe was speaking at the 26 year anniversary of the death of Chris Hani on Wednesday.

Hani was assassinated by Janus Walusz, who is still serving his prison sentence after his parole application was rejected in January this year.

Hani led the ANC military wing, uMkhonto weSizwe, and served in various capacities going back to the 1960s.

"As much as I appreciate the commemoration on the 10th of April every year it is so important to only remember our leaders once a year upon their death but carry their legacy throughout everything we do."

Hani said their sacrifices need to be entrenched in every child from a very young age.

"We must celebrate them by teaching our children from a young age who they were, what they wanted for South Africa, their methodology, their sacrifices. We must wear our leaders with a sense of pride."

She said the former leaders’ teachings need to be a part of the history textbooks in schools.

"Not only to bring them periodically to appease our guilt but make them the fabrics of our society by memorialising them in history books, schools and museums."

Hani also encouraged the youth to vote on May 8, saying it one of the most powerful tools given to the youth is the power choice.

"The one powerful tool I keep telling young people is their right to make a choice. There is so much noise regarding the elections from all parties and I hear the lament that none is better than the other but the most amazing ultimate sacrifices is made by such leaders as O.R Tambo and Chris Hani is that we do have a choice and it is not only our right but a privilege to exercise this right."

She described it as disheartening to feel powerless.

"We need to create the pathways to give hope to our youth that they can have the opportunity through education and hard work that they can escape the trap of poverty - Chris Hani.

"There is no better way to arm the youth than the above quote, it is one of my passions at the moment but it is not an easy road as it takes collaborations on so many levels and sometimes that is not forthcoming on the powers that be."
