Makhura: E-tolls not part of Gauteng's future

Gauteng Premier David Makhura is adamant that the e-toll system is not part of the province's future.

Makhura was speaking to African National Congress (ANC) supporters following the failed motion of no confidence in  Ekurhuleni Mayor, Mzwandile Masina.

During his first Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS) on Wednesday, Finance Minister Tito Mboweni said e-tolls are here to stay.

Mboweni emphasised the importance of paying for tolled roads to ensure that the country has “a road transport infrastructure that works”.

However, Makhura said getting rid of the e-tolls formed part of the resolutions taking at the ANC’s Gauteng provincial conference.

Makhura told the crowd that the unpopular tolling system has not worked in the province.

"We as the ANC in Gauteng do not support the e-tolls. And we said at the ANC conference we are going to engage with the national government and the president," said Makhura.

To what seemed to be a message directed to the new finance minister, Makhura told ANC supporters not be confused by certain individuals.

He promised the province would come up with a method of paying for the maintenance of the roads currently under the tolling systems.

"The e-tolls are not part of the future of this province," Makhura reiterated.
