Makhura resigns as Gauteng premier, paving way for Lesufi

David Makhura has tendered his resignation as Gauteng premier and as a member of the provincial legislature effective from Thursday.

Makhura handed over his resignation to the Speaker of the provincial legislature Ntombi Mekgwe on Tuesday.
He has served as premier for the past eight years.
The resignation comes after Panyaza Lesufi was recently voted in as the provincial chairperson of the ANC at the party’s Gauteng provincial conference.
He is expected to succeed Makhura.
The provincial elgislature is expected to hold a special council sitting on Thursday for the election of the new Premier.
In a statement released on Thursday, Makhura said the decision comes after several engagements with the leadership of the ANC on the timing and details of the handover.
"The ANC has been seized with this matter over the past few weeks and has now completed its internal processes.
“At the 14th ANC Provincial Conference, I passed the baton to the newly elected leadership collective led by comrade Panyaza Lesufi. Having worked with many ANC leaders and activists in Gauteng to rebuild and position Gauteng as a significant player in the affairs of the movement and a country at large, I have always contemplated how best to ensure a smooth and seamless transition from the collective I lead in the PEC and in government in order to achieve maximum unity, continuity and change.”
